Our History

Part of Ronda’s earliest travel stories.

Hotel Royal’s story belongs to a time when Ronda was beginning to welcome international visitors. The arrival of the railway in 1892 made the city more accessible and helped its early hotel trade to grow.

From Gibraltar to the Alameda

Originally from Gibraltar, Augusto Berutich Martínez began his hospitality business in Ronda by taking over the railway station’s restaurant and Hotel América, later renamed Hotel España. A few years later, he expanded the business by building Hotel Royal opposite the Alameda gardens.

The original Modernist building became a meeting place for local society and, alongside Hotel Reina Victoria, a popular choice for British travellers discovering the city.

Arturo Berutich: a life of travel and hospitality

In 1914, Augusto and his wife, Matilde Llinás, settled permanently in Ronda with their children to run the Royal. Among them was Arturo Berutich y Llinás, who had spent his childhood and teenage years in Gibraltar.

His studies in Law, Diplomacy and Journalism in London, followed by travels across Europe and the Americas, gave him an international outlook that would shape his life. He worked in the United States as a correspondent for La Vanguardia and ABC, and as a purser aboard a British ship sailing between Santoña and Baltimore.

Whenever he was in Ronda, Arturo helped with purchasing and in the kitchen at Hotel Royal. His work in the family business went hand in hand with what would become his lifelong calling: sharing Ronda with the world and welcoming those who came to visit.

From tourism to football in Ronda

Arturo became one of the pioneers of tourist information and tourism promotion in Ronda. For forty-five years, he headed the city’s Tourist Office, helping visitors from different countries discover its sights and stories.

His contribution also extended to sport. A keen football enthusiast since his years in Gibraltar, he helped introduce the game to Ronda in 1917 and founded Ronda F.C. five years later. His story became part of both the city’s tourism heritage and its everyday life.

The Royal in Ronda’s memory

Old photographs and postcards preserve the original building, its balconies and its façade overlooking the Alameda. The hotel also features in the title of a work by Scottish artist Sir Muirhead Bone, “Hotel Royal and Almeda, Ronda, Spain”, held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

In the 1980s, the Modernist building was demolished and replaced by the present building. Its memory lives on in historical images and in the story of tourism in Ronda.

Today, Hotel Royal continues to welcome travellers opposite the Alameda del Tajo gardens. A straightforward, comfortable stay in central Ronda, with a name that holds a place in the city’s history.
